Saw Ross Martin this weekend on the Carol Burnett Show in "Storefront Hospital" sketch with Carol Burnett (1970). Ross was so funny! |

I have never seen that one. I always liked Carol Burnett, maybe partially because she liked Jimmy Stewart so much, if that makes any sense. Back when there were variety shows galore. You always have to be careful about meeting a public figure you have admired, but I really wish I had met Ross. I bet he would have been the best. Have you seen RC on Donny and Marie? The beginning was great, as Ted Knight, a WWW guest star, and RC have a humorous entry. |

Not only can you see the above-mentioned sketch, but his second show in full (in two segments) can be found at shoutfactorytv.com. Just search for "Ross Martin" and scroll down a bit.

I know I'm repeating myself, and for that I apologize. But if you haven't watched Carol Burnett and Ross Martin competing on "Password" (October, 1966), you owe yourself two-and-a-half hours of entertainment:

These, I think, are just delightful. Both Carol and Ross play this game with such gusto. They're smart, literate, and use their voices and facial expressions so wonderfully well.
Bear in mind that, at least during the 1950s and '60s, network TV game-show appearances were about one step above, maybe below, soap operas (on which a lot of fine actors did get their starts). Game-show appearances paid next to nothing. Angela Lansbury said straight out in an interview that, during her lean years between jobs, game-show appearances put food on the table for her family. Ms. Burnett had broken into fame with The Gary Moore Show but, in '66, was two years away from her classic comedy-variety show. Mr. Martin was surely there to plug West at the request of its show-runner (by that time, Angela's brother Bruce). What strikes me about these classic episodes of "Password," "Stump the Stars," and (take your pick) is how much respect most of the celebrities gave them on camera. Carol and Ross join with Alan Ludden in doing their best to help the civilians onstage relax and earn some money while entertaining the studio and home audiences. They are funny, utterly courteous, never condescending, complimentary of each other's skill, and absolutely throw themselves into the game with such concentration and verve and joy.
Where did those days go? |

I love those Password episodes, ccb. My kids love Carol Burnett because of those episodes. I hadn't realized that it was a kind of part time job for some actors. |

Way to go Ross. Japan had good taste. |
